Best Cyprus Bus App for Live Tracking

If you searched for a Cyprus bus app a few years ago, the answer was often "pick the one that covers your district." That has changed: the government now publishes one shared live bus feed for the main operators, and most tracker apps use it. Live buses on a map are no longer a unique selling point. Accuracy still varies by route, vehicle and server uptime.

This guide explains what that shared data covers, when to use the official Pame app, and where BusCyprus still earns its place for visitors and cross-district trips.

Quick answer

• Need live urban or intercity buses on a map? The official Pame app and BusCyprus both use the same public operator data for Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Famagusta district and intercity coaches when the live feed is online. A handful of other free trackers exist; they draw from the same source and look much the same on screen.
• Need Motion card top-ups or the official operator experience? Use Pame. That is the government-backed app for the Motion network, and the only place to manage a Motion card.
• Flying in, crossing districts, or comparing airport shuttle vs public bus? Use BusCyprus for route guides with live departure boards, one-tap trip planning from each article, Kapnos / Limassol Airport Express timetables, and nextbike on the map.
• Only resort-hopping in Ayia Napa / Paralimni? OSEA is part of the national feed, so those buses appear in BusCyprus too, alongside the intercity coach if you decide to leave the district for a day.

The shared data layer (why most apps look similar)

Cyprus publishes open transit data through the National Access Point (CyNAP) and data.gov.cy. The current real-time collection replaced separate feeds per district and now includes, among others:

The static files carry routes, stops and timetables. The live feed adds bus positions and predicted arrivals when on-board tracking is working. BusCyprus reads this through CyNAP (see our real-time data status page). So do other unofficial trackers built on the same open data.

When the government feed or on-board GPS fails, every app that relies on it shows stale or scheduled times. That is an infrastructure limit, not something one third-party app fixes alone.

Comparison at a glance

"Live map" here means official operator buses from the national feed. It does not mean every private airport shuttle broadcasts a position.

That last row covers a fair number of apps and browser sites, and it is not evasiveness: they read the same government feed, so for "show me the bus on a map" they land in much the same place. Global multi-city planners also cover Cyprus, with the depth you would expect from one region among hundreds. Feature lists and store ratings change often enough that naming them here would be out of date before you read it.

What BusCyprus adds beyond the shared feed

Honest version: for "show me bus 612 on the map," BusCyprus and Pame are drawing from the same well. A generic tracker app does not add much on top of that.

BusCyprus is built for trips the open-data portal does not fully solve on its own:

1. Supplementary airport and express operators (Kapnos, Limassol Airport Express / LEP, and other supplement feeds). These appear in BusCyprus with clear notices that the operator has not verified the data and that live vehicle tracking is not available for Kapnos. 2. nextbike station locations on the same map as bus stops.
3. Written route guides on this blog: each guide loads today's real departures for the stops it mentions, and links straight into the trip planner with your from/to already filled in (for example Paphos Airport to the city).

4. Six languages (EN, EL, DE, HE, PL, RU) for tourist traffic.
5. Full web map at buscyprus.cy without installing anything (Android app available on Google Play).

The trip planner can chain routes across operators, so a search from Paphos Airport to Karavella might suggest a 612 plus a short connecting bus when that beats waiting for a direct 613.

Pame vs BusCyprus

Pame (from Cyprus Public Transport / Motion) is the official app. It is the right place to top up a Motion card, plan journeys on the public network, and track buses with operator backing. Its marketing describes live tracking and journey planning across Cyprus public transport, not only Nicosia.

BusCyprus is aimed at visitors and cross-district trips where you also want:

• Written guides that we keep updated when routes or fares change
• Kapnos vs public-bus context at airports
• nextbike plus bus on one map
• An Android app plus a desktop-friendly web map (works in iPhone Safari too; no App Store build yet)

If you live in Nicosia and only need Motion ticketing, keep Pame. If you are reading a BusCyprus airport guide and want the next departure without switching apps, stay in BusCyprus.

Accuracy: what to expect

None of the apps above guarantees a dot on the map for every run.

• Positions come from on-board tracking aggregated by the government feed.
• Refresh intervals are typically tens of seconds, not continuous GPS.
• Some routes run to schedule even when live data is missing; others may show a bus that never left the depot.
• Kapnos and some express legs in BusCyprus use published timetables, not live positions.
